INITIAL TEST 4º ESO
READ THE TEXT AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS
THE DEAD SEA IS DYING
The Dead Sea is known by school children all over the world, and is visited by many people every year. Swimming in the Dead Sea is impossible, and if you drink the water, you'll be very ill, but sitting or lying in the sea, which is full of minerals that are good for you, is very healthy!
However, now the Dead Sea is dying. The sea is fed from the River Jordan to the north, and now almost all the water is taken from the river by Jordan, Israel, Syria and Palestine for thousand of farms where fruit and vegetables are grown. The water that reaches the sea is very dirty, and the little water there is, is then almost all taken by a mineral factory.
The result? The edge of the sea is moving back more than one metre every year. In the past, there were hotels next to the water's edge. Nowadays, tourists have to be driven from the hotels to the sea in trucks and minibuses. And now there is an extra danger: enormous spaces have suddenly appeared in the ground where the water has disapeared. If a bus falls into one of these, someone will probably be killed.
But perhaps the biggest problem of all is that there is no cooperation between the countries to save this ancient sea from disappearing completely because some of them hate each other.
